      In Beijing there are many telephones. Most people have telephones in their homes. They can call others at home. There are a lot of public telephones in the city too. You can easily find one in the street, a post office, a hotel or a shop. By telephone you can talk to a friend in another city or another country.

      telephone receiver and mouthpiece 電話聽筒和話筒

      pick up the receiver 拿起電話聽筒

      put down the receiver 放下電話

      put in a coin 投幣

      answer the telephone 接電話

      be on the phone 在打電話

      I‘m sorry, the line is busy. = The number is engaged.

      對不起,線路在講話中.即:占線 (此句為接線員用語.)

      3.begin to do sth. 開始做某事=begin doing sth.

      She began to cry.

      When did it begin to rain?

      Hearing this he began to laugh.

      I’m beginning to understand. (此句to understand 不能用understanding替換,必須用beginning to do 形式.)

      4.pick up 拿起,拾起(使用代詞時必須放中間)

      I picked up a coin in the road.

      He picked up the phone.

      I‘m going to pick up my coat from the cleaner’s. (pick up 取)

      Pick me up at the hotel. (pick up 駕車去接)

      put down 放下,使(乘客等)下(車)

      He put down the receiver.

      Put me down at the next corner, please.

      5.May I……? 我可以……嗎?

      回答May I ……?時,用Certainly. , Why not? , Yes, please. , Sure.

      如用Yes, you may . 則有對小孩和晚輩給予許可的意味。

      否定回答No, you may not. 的說法較粗魯,所以對平輩以上的人則用No, I‘m sorry. 或I’m afraid you cannot. 例如:

      a) ----May I sit down?

      ----Certainly.

      b) ----May I come in?

      ----Yes, please.

      c) ----May I use your phone?

      ----Why not?

      d) ----This is Albert speaking. May I speak to Jack?

      ----Hold on, please.

      that引導的賓語從句

      由一個句子做賓語,被稱作賓語從句.賓語從句用陳述句的語序.

      由that引導的賓語從句,that可以省略.如:

      I hope (that) you have a good time.

      I hope (that) she writes to me soon.

      She hopes (that) I (will) pass the examination.

      hope to do sth. 表示主語希望做某事,而不是希望別人做。如:

      We hope to visit this place again.

      I hope to go to college.

      除hope外,還有一些詞后面常跟that引導的賓語從句.如:

      I think (that) I‘ll go to my uncle’s on Sunday.

      I believe (that) she will come tomorrow.

      He said (that) she was ill in bed.

      They promised (us) (that) they would keep their promise.

      keep one‘s promise 遵守諾言

      I know (that) the job is difficult.

      He remembered (that) he had to finish the homework by the next day.

      I forgot (that) you don’t like carrots.
