a number of 和the number of的區別
（1）a number of
意為“許多，大量”，后加可數名詞復數。作主語時，謂語動詞用復數。
（2）the number of
意為“......的數量”，后加可數名詞復數。作主語時，謂語動詞用單數。
2a number of用法
修飾可數名詞,就像some,many,lots of,a lot of那樣的.注意a number of修飾的可數名詞要用復數形式,be動詞也要用復數（即are,具體因時態而定）!
e.g.A large number of students are ill these days because of the swine flu.

3the number of用法
修飾了名詞之后be動詞要用單數,因為（從中文意思方面理解）數量就是一個數字,所以必須要用單數（即is,具體因時態而定).
e.g.The number of the students in our class is 53.
我們班學生的人數（即數量）是53.
